I started playing when I was four, on my grandmother's old piano. Nobody taught me, and I still can't read a note.
Everything I play is improvised, somewhere between classical and jazz. I sit down and play what feels right in the moment. That's why no two performances sound the same.
My concerts vary a lot. Some are intimate, and the music gets pretty emotional. Others turn into parties, everyone dancing by the end. I read the room, not a score, and let that decide what I play.
I'm a pianist based in Amsterdam, and I play across Europe and Canada. What I do is simple: I sit at the piano and play what I'm feeling, and hope it lands with whoever's listening.
Projects
"Love Junkie" came from thinking about past relationships and how consuming love can be. Those intense feelings, the highs, lows, and obsessions, became improvised piano pieces.
Cellist Qusai Naim and clarinetist Martin Grozdanoski joined me on several tracks. Alex Covert created the artwork, while India Zahra and Charley Ranzino contributed poetry about their own experiences with love.
We recorded at Hidden Gem studio in Amsterdam. Every track was improvised on the spot, and the mix of piano, cello, clarinet, and spoken word captures different facets of love's intensity.
Playing live is what drives me.
Improvising in front of an audience creates an energy you can't replicate. It keeps the music honest and alive. Amsterdam has a great music scene. Last year's album release at Tenclub sold out: 150 people packed into that space, one of the best nights I've had.
I play regularly around the city: Ruigoord during festivals, the ADAM tower, house concerts, cafes, even on canal boats. Every venue brings something different.
I've been collaborating with visual artist Alex Covert on a piece called Vulnerability / Power. She paints blindfolded while I play: vulnerability as its own kind of strength.
